Mantlepieces, cotton textiles and bedding
Taller Águila Zapoteca
Águila Zapoteca is made up of 25 individuals, 8 of whom are dedicated to cotton textiles and 17 to wool.
Our textiles represent everything we inherited from our Zapotec wisdom and culture.
Our Story
We are a family run workshop in Teotitlán del Valle founded by our great grandfather. Since 1996 our family, Lazo Martínez, decided to make significant changes to our ancestral looms by implementing new techniques and by using cotton instead of wool. Without having much knowledge or experience, little by little through experimentation, testing and trial and error, we realized that similar techniques applied to wool could be used for cotton textiles and thus began to create unique and beautiful pieces that inspire us and fulfill our creative endeavors.
Our family has gone through many changes in recent years, but we have managed to get ahead through the implementation of new models and combinations for the elaboration of table linens, bedding, napkins and all kinds of cotton textile pieces. In 2010, the Hernandez Vazquez family joined our workshop. Their wool work inspired us and continues to influence our work and the creativity we yield for the creation of our pieces.
Today, Águila Zapoteca is made up of 25 individuals, 8 of whom are dedicated to cotton textiles and 17 to wool. Each of our textiles represent everything that was inherited to us from our Zapotec wisdom and culture. Each member of our workshop works closely together with excitement to continue learning, as well as teaching new generations to preserve their roots, culture, traditions and language.
